DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Riverside Maximus, 21J, Model 1888, 16S, heavy 18K gold original A.W.W.Co. HC with very unusual rear engraving of a dog with serpent tail and forked tongue surrounded by flames (a literal hellhound), front with ornate monogram initials, gold cuvette engraved "To William McBride Esq. M.A. Provincial Manager, Winnipeg, Man, from the North American Life Assurance Co, Toronto, being first prize in a personal competition for business for the last three months of 1897," white enamel DS dial with script "Waltham" and "A.W.W.Co." markings as typical to this mvt, fully capped lever escapement, three visible diamond endstones, ornate nickel damascene, s#7000320. Gross weight of assembled watch 83.1 dwt (129.3 g). A magnificent original example of this scarce high grade watch, the total production of the hunting case Model 1888 Riverside Maximus is believed to be approximately 700 made.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, small patch of oxide to concave mirrored hub of larger winding wheel, few minuscule pinpoint specks of oxide to damascened perimeter portion of larger winding wheel; virtually flawless dial with few small micro-fine scratches and pinpoint surface nicks; excellent hands, oxide to tip of minute; case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail, front lift spring not contacting lid to fully opened position and allowing lid to tilt back approximately one-quarter toward closed with gravity; tight bow thinned a bit at top, crown shows medium wear with ridge break; good glass crystal.
